Turning the Page on Illiteracy Sponsored by Greektown Casino-Hotel
About Turning the Page on Illiteracy (TPI) Program Detroit Public School students are at serious risk. Over the last few years, 41 schools have closed, the dropout rate has increased to 25 percent, and in 2010, only 51 percent of seniors graduated. And because of a budget deficit, students are subject to a lack of interest and enthusiasm from teachers, a decline in academic resources, and cuts to elective courses and after-school activities. And because of this lack, many students are losing their drive to succeed.
To help combat this issue, Greektown Casino-Hotel has developed the “Turning the Page on Iliteracy” (TPI) program. The program is geared to not only empower youth through the basic skill of reading, but encourage them to reach their full potential, as they are our leaders of tomorrow. TPI will host various events under its umbrella, including the kick-off book drive event where the general public will be asked to donate books to help fill the libraries of metro Detroit area elementary and middle schools. Other planned events include mentorship and school adoptions programs. Help us fill the libraries of schools in need by donating a new to gently used K-8 grade appropriate book. Books can be dropped off at any of the 30 Park it festivals throughout the summer. Help us fight illiteracy in our community
